Ladder Inspections by AFW Training Limited

Ladders and stepladders are among the most commonly used pieces of work equipment in the UK, but they are also involved in countless workplace accidents every year. Regular inspections help identify damage, wear, defects, and unsafe equipment before an incident occurs.

Why Are Ladder Inspections Needed?

  • Reduce the risk of falls and injuries
  • Identify damaged or defective equipment
  • Demonstrate compliance with health and safety legislation
  • Maintain accurate inspection records
  • Extend the service life of your assets

Legal Requirements

Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), employers must ensure that work equipment is suitable, maintained, and inspected where necessary to ensure it remains safe for use.

Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR), equipment used for work at height must be regularly inspected and maintained to minimise risks to employees and others.

How often should ladders be inspected?
There is no single legally fixed interval. The frequency must come from a risk assessment that considers how often the ladder is used, how heavily, and the conditions it is stored and used in. As a general rule, ladders in regular commercial or industrial use are given a recorded detailed inspection quarterly, while lightly used equipment in a benign indoor environment may be inspected every six or twelve months. A ladder must also be checked after any incident that could have damaged it, regardless of when the last inspection took place.
Who is allowed to inspect ladders?
A competent person — someone with the training, knowledge and practical experience to recognise defects and judge their significance. There is no requirement for that person to be external. Training an employee is usually cheaper and far more practical than bringing in a contractor every quarter, because inspections can then be done as part of routine site management.
What records do we need to keep?

UK law requires you to keep written records of all detailed ladder inspections carried out by a competent person — including defects, actions taken, and the ladder’s unique ID. Pre‑use checks do not need to be recorded.

What happens if a ladder fails inspection?
It must be taken out of service immediately, tagged clearly and physically removed from where it could be picked up and used. Ladders with safety-critical defects are generally not economic or safe to repair and should be destroyed rather than resold or donated. The course covers quarantine and disposal procedures.
